Me (feeling confident): Capacity is ‘how much we can do’, and ‘Capability is how well we can do’.

Coach: Then what is POTENTIAL?

Potential is how much really you can do.

A Guide To Women’s Mental and Physical Health

Here we are celebrating International Women’s Day this year. You will see T.V commercials around it, brands offering women’s day sale, restaurants pouring out love and giving you 50% off on your dining in bills, male counterparts will get advertisements on how to woo females this Women’s Day, right? I have no intention to dampen your spirits and sound like a spoilsport here, however, I do think that more important than all this is understanding the problems women face, women’s health, and women’s mental health. If you are nodding in agreement, then stay here with me a bit longer because we are going to discuss the 3 most common Women health issues this Women’s day and the measures to tackle them as well! Let us begin:

 Depression: As per WHO “Depression is not only the most common women’s mental health problem but may be more persistent in women than men. The high prevalence of sexual violence to which women are exposed and the correspondingly high rate of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following such violence, renders women the largest single group of people affected by this disorder”. And here is the shocker, this is not limited to any class/section in the society, women from all strata are impacted and vulnerable to this violence and it’s after-effects. So that brings us to the next question, how can we help?

 What needs to be done:

  • The first step is to provide support. Psychological support from family, friends, and care providers. The fact that family understands and healthcare providers acknowledge the condition is crucial for the recovery.
  • Having access to the resources in case somebody is struggling to make the choices in the face of severe events.
  • Having the liberty and autonomy of exercising some control in response to severe events.

 Cancer: Breast cancer and cervical cancer are the two most common cancers affecting women. As per the WHO report, The latest global figures show that around half a million women die from cervical cancer, and half a million from breast cancer each year. Why are these figures worrisome? It is because both types of cancers are preventable if only women are screened and provided with the necessary treatment on time.

 What needs to be done:

  • Educating women about these diseases, providing the necessary resources, emphasizing the need for periodic self-check at home (for breast cancer).
  • Periodic screenings by health care providers
  • On-time treatment

 Autoimmune diseases: As per research, autoimmune diseases affect approximately 8% of the population, 78% of whom are women. Let’s first understand what an autoimmune disease is: An autoimmune disease occurs when body cells attack healthy cells instead of eliminating threats, like infections, viruses, etc. The basic immune response between men and women has been known to differ, with women producing a more vigorous immune response and increased antibody production.

What needs to be done:

  • Regular supplements like Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc are known to strengthen immunity and protect against infections.
  • Sleeping less than 6 hours in known to affect the immune system adversely, so we don’t what that cycle to kick in. Have restful sleep ladies!
  • Practicing meditation for stress relief is imperative. Stress leads to inflammatory changes in the body.

This women’s Day let us empower and educate the ladies around rather than merely showering them with gifts and talks. Remember health is happiness!

                      

 

Happiness Enhances Employee Productivity, but how?

 

 Every organization understands the importance of keeping employees happy. They offer the best pay in the market, luxurious workplace, special arrangements for fun activities, Gym, various perks like life & health insurance, assistance in the car & home loans, etc. 

This will, of course, add to the happiness of employees. But as per the Harvard Happiness study, 80% of the employees are still unhappy at work. And employers are also unhappy with the low levels of productivity in spite of the above-mentioned perks. 

The core reason is, they do not enjoy the work assigned to them. If the employees enjoy the task assigned to them, the productivity levels would be increased by many folds. Let’s see how.

 Employees who enjoy their work will be hungry for the happiness they would derive from the work. Hence to fulfill this hunger, they change the definition of productivity. For them, productivity means – exceeding expectations by being innovative in their job such that, the job is taken to some other level. This is when real happiness emerges and happiness at workplace makes business sense.

This happiness, in turn, fuels the zeal to be more creative in their work for next time. Because next time, the same level of work will not give the same happiness. They try to break their own record and take the task to another level to derive more real happiness. This cycle continues.

For them, the work will be similar to playing a video game. 

Happy employees flourish their enthusiasm towards work at the workplace and hence create a good environment for other employees too.

All Human pursuits ultimately culminate in the pursuit of Happiness. This applies to every walk of life including Work Life. Hence it not surprising that every study has been revealing that people stick longer to workplaces where Employee Happiness is a cultural aspect. People also work Harder, Smarter, and together when they are happy. 

While Happiness is an end in itself, it also makes business sense to invest money, time, and effort in trying to enhance happiness at the workplace to reap numerous benefits. Happiness Chemicals

 

All four hormones are present in the state of flow. 

1.Endorphins

 

Endorphins are opioid neuropeptides, which means they are produced by the central nervous system to help us deal with physical pain. They also make us feel lightheaded and even giddy at times. One non-painful (well, not too painful) way to induce endorphins is exercise.

Endorphins are released after both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. 

Make your employees Enrol for our Gym/yoga/Zumba/dance facility or make it very convenient and economical for them.

Along with regular exercise, laughter is one of the easiest ways to induce endorphin release. Even the anticipation and expectation of laugher, e.g., attending a comedy show, increases levels of endorphins. Taking your sense of humor to work, forwarding funny emails, and finding several things to laugh at during the day is a great way to increase this hormone.

Aromatherapies: The smell of vanilla and lavender has been linked with the production of endorphins. Studies have shown that dark chocolate and spicy foods can lead the brain to release endorphins. Keep some scented oils and some dark chocolate at your desk for a quick endorphin boost.

2. Serotonin

Serotonin may be the best-known happiness chemical because it’s the one that antidepressant medication primarily addresses. 

Serotonin is the chemical we feel when we are respected, admired, and given preferential treatment. It boosts our confidence and makes us feel awesome.

When people see you and respect you as their leader, it boosts your serotonin by making you feel great and it boosts their serotonin because they trust you.

Reflecting on past significant achievements allows the brain to relive the experience. Our brain has trouble telling the difference between what’s real and imagined, so it produces serotonin in both cases. It’s another reason why gratitude practices are popular. They remind us that we are valued and have much to value in life. If you need a serotonin boost during a stressful day, take a few moments to reflect on past achievements and victories.

Have lunch or coffee outside and expose yourself to the sun for 20 minutes; our skin absorbs UV rays, which promotes vitamin D and serotonin production. Although too much ultraviolet light isn’t good, some daily exposure is healthy to boost serotonin levels.

Serotonin affects our bodies in many ways. The most common link is made with the person’s confidence and sense of belonging. Therefore, if a person wishes to increase the serotonin and with that their sense of purpose, they need to challenge themselves on a regular basis.

Exposure to bright light, especially sunlight, is one way to increase serotonin. Exercise and happy thoughts also stimulate the production of this chemical. Some research has found that a higher intake of tryptophan-heavy foods, relative to other foods in the diet, may do the trick as well.

If you’re in a good mood, you’ve got serotonin to thank. And if you’re in a bad mood, you’ve got serotonin to blame. It’s a regulator. Interestingly, Nicole explains, 80 percent of serotonin exists in the gut and is governed by your state of hunger (yes, this is why you’re hungry).

Imagine trying to work on a project that requires 20 people on a team, but instead, you’re given a team of 10. Do you think the project will be done on time and that it will be done well?

Probably not.

The brain is no different. If we have low levels of our happy neurotransmitter, Serotonin, it makes it more challenging for our brain to feel happy. Low levels of serotonin are seen cases of depression and the lower the levels of serotonin, the more severe the depression may get. 

3. Dopamine ‘the reward molecule

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter often referred to as the “chemical of reward.” When you score a goal, hit a target, or accomplish a task, you receive a pleasurable hit of dopamine in your brain that tells you you’ve done a good job. But you can also get a natural dose of dopamine when you perform acts of kindness toward others.

Volunteering has been shown to increase dopamine as well as have other long-term health benefits. And some research has even found that it only takes thoughts of loving-kindness to bring on the dopamine high.

Dopamine motivates us to take action toward goals, desires, and needs and gives a surge of reinforcing pleasure when achieving them. Procrastination, self-doubt, and lack of enthusiasm are linked with low levels of dopamine. Studies on rats showed those with low levels of dopamine always opted for an easy option and less food; those with higher levels exerted the effort needed to receive twice the amount of food.

Break big goals down into little pieces — rather than only allowing our brains to celebrate when we’ve hit the finish line, we can create a series of little finish lines that releases dopamine. And it’s crucial to actually celebrate — buy a bottle of wine, or head to your favorite restaurant whenever you meet a small goal.

Instead of being left with a dopamine hangover, create new goals before achieving your current one. That ensures a continual flow for experiencing dopamine. As an employer and leader, recognizing the accomplishments of your team, e.g. sending them an email, or giving a bonus, will allow them to have a dopamine hit and increase future motivation and productivity.

Dopamine is what produces that irresistible urge to check every notification on your phone.

Each time we clear the notification, respond to the text, or read an email it gives us a boost in dopamine. Since dopamine makes us feel great, we instinctively do things that give us a quick dopamine fix without considering the value of those things.

For example, a common form of procrastination is filling your time with busy-work and avoiding the important task that you dread doing. Each meaningless task that you complete gives you a temporary boost in satisfaction, but is it really helping you? Probably not.

4. Oxytocin the bonding molecule

Mothers may be familiar with oxytocin, a hormone produced in abundance during pregnancy. Oxytocin is primarily associated with loving touch and close relationships.

This hormone provides multiple whammies of warm fuzzies, by stimulating dopamine and serotonin while reducing anxiety. To get your hit of oxytocin without popping ecstasy, give someone you love a cuddle. Even a pet will do.

When someone receives a gift, their oxytocin levels can rise. 

What we eat affects the production of these hormones and thereby impacts the state of Flow.

“I am getting bored” is a feedback to yourself that you are “not happy”

Right now, our life is nothing farther than a ‘To-do List’ instead of a ‘Bucket-List’. Organizations consider money as the criteria of ‘employee happiness’ and ‘optimum performance’. Parents consider gadgets as the source of ‘entertainment’ for modern infants. Schools consider results as the symptom of a ‘successful future’ for students. What’s lacking? None focuses on a basic phenomenon of human life—How to Tackle Boredom?

How to stop filling in the gaps of ‘waiting’ with ‘technological satisfaction’ that appear mundane after continual binge-watching? What caused boredom in the first place—lack of gratitude or lack of creativity? I suppose the latter is the answer!

Undoubtedly, long hours of wait get boring; thus, everything is so fast-paced that we’ve stopped thinking and started feeling drained. Repeat cycle of everyday activity without adventure, fun, and innovation!

Listen, have you ever thought why we are humans, not machines? What is the primary difference between the two? “Creativity” out of nothingness—humans have a tremendous power to create new out of the old, instead of creating copies of what’s already there. Newton wasn’t busy washing dishes or cutting wood when he contemplated over an apple falling down the tree and create a whole new law of gravity!

Amusingly, all those stress-relievers, mind-calming exercises are developed to keep us busy not creative.

Let’s change the dimensions of ‘boredom’ to mold it into something interesting—the artistic bend of mind.

Hobbies are interesting but they have been extracted out of our lives. I remember I had a deep interest in DIYs and pet keeping until 8th grade. From then onward, I got stuck in the vicious cycle of a worrisome life. Only a reverie of the past is my greatest possession.

However, there is always a way where there is a strong will. Think like a child: ‘ENGAGE’ in life and create your ‘PERSONAL WORLD’ to get back to whenever you are free or waiting or bored. Here is a bucket list to kick start your creative side of life:

  1. Write poetry using five senses based on your last five minutes spent alone in the fresh air.
  2. Try out a DIY for at least 5 times to perfect the new ‘skill’. Have you tried making paper cranes yet?
  3. Start recording your pet’s mischief and create some funny memes out of it.
  4. Create a bucket list of places you wanted to explore within the city or country but haven’t. Start collecting pictures, create your snap book, and don’t plan anything. Go without plans, anytime and anywhere—that’s more interesting.
  5. Imagine every object is talking to you—what would it say to your inner soul?
  6. Try new forms of art—music, dance, painting, and whatever you ever thought you were incapable of achieving.
  7. Self-talk is the best talk. As your younger self what you should do right then and there? What if your younger self was bored, what would he/she do at that moment?
  8. Create your own vocabulary for everything you see around you—a chair can be a modified toilet seat—explore the funny aspect of your hidden self.
  9. Remember your childhood interests in Seven Wonder of the World, Astronomy,
  10. What’s your favorite movie? The Dark Knight? Let’s alter the ending—let’s play with the actions of the characters if it was you who were directing the movie.
  1. For employee happiness, organizations can task them to decorate their cabinets in their own interesting ways; or maybe you can create teams for interesting competitions such as photography of Nature, Décor of their Office Spaces, and so on. You know what: you’d see wonders in employee performances as well.

All in all, boredom is a state of mind. It is an action verb that can be replaced with another action verb ‘creativity’. I wouldn’t say ‘look at the brighter side of things’, that’s too lame now. Can you really live a fairy tale life full of happiness?

“And they all lived happily ever after”, and there the fairy tale ends as our protagonists, go off together into the sunset. But is life really like that? Can we really assume that because we find romance or we’ve made a new plan, that everything from now on will be like a fairy tale?

A fairy tale assumes that happiness is an automatic follow on and an automatic right that is yours to choose.  Undiluted happiness in a cloudless sky with none of the problems of everyday life to cast a shadow – that’s the world of fairy tales. The fairy-tale version of happiness does not match reality as most of us know it.

The truth is that there are no happy endings that will last a lifetime. There is just a series of new beginnings and endings and as one thing changes, so another will come along to take its place.

Nobody stays at a fixed state forever. Although you may be madly in love with someone or you are passionate about your life now, there are no guarantees that this happy state will continue forever.

In an ideal relationship, both parties evolve and change in ways that are compatible with each other. Even couples who have been happily married for decades have to be committed to weathering the hard times and adopting some compromise with their partner as both of them age and change.

The same is true with whatever life path you choose because nothing remains the same; we are all constantly evolving and the world is evolving too.

You can’t survive on undiluted happiness. Can you imagine if every day was exactly the same as the next and you never had to face up to reality? Sounds great for a holiday or a vacation but it just doesn’t work for real life.

For a start, you would have to ensure you never became close to anyone including your family, your friends, and that you never had any type of pet. Why? The simple fact is that everyone and everything has a limited time span and people and animals die. The only way to avoid the heartbreak of loss is to avoid love. And avoiding love is not the recipe for a  or personal fulfillment.

The idea of personal fulfillment is unique. Too many people assume we all want the same things in life — and therefore we all need the same things in life to be happy.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. You could be the type of person who needs money, a successful career and excitement to be personally fulfilled. You might thrive on travel or adventure. Alternatively, your personal fulfillment and happiness might come from the people around you and your familiar surroundings.

There are no right or wrong ways to be happy and you will probably find that your personal goals change as you move through your life.

Every one of us is a completely unique being. That means that each person will need to create their own unique life that is right for them in order to be fulfilled.

Nothing is ever as trouble-free as a fairy tale ending but if it was, can you imagine just how boring life would be?
