How to Measure and Boost Employee Satisfaction ?

We are all well aware of how important customer satisfaction is, but are companies aware of the importance of employee satisfaction? Companies that have neither satisfied customers nor satisfied employees are on a definite path of self-destruction. A satisfied employee is easy to recognize as they are highly engaged, motivated, excited, and invested.

Employee satisfaction is a corollary of customer satisfaction. Satisfied customers bring more business, and satisfied employees produce more business. Thus employee satisfaction has certain obvious benefits for the company such as optimum performance and higher productivity. Other benefits include a positive outlook amongst the employees at the workplace, lower absenteeism, and investment in the company’s ideals.  Generally, satisfied employees are happier in professional settings (work) and personal spaces (home).

If employee satisfaction is so important, then perhaps the next question to answer would be how does one measure it? Once measured, how can companies use that analysis to improve employee satisfaction?  1. Open and honest dialogue: It is of utmost importance for the leader of any company to be tete-a-tete with their employees in an individual manner. No matter what your employee strength may be, it is imperative for bosses to take time out for a quick yet meaningful chat. It may only be once a month or in two months, but consistency is what matters and will build trust as well. The dialogue between them should be honest, open, transparent, and forthcoming. The manager should encourage the employees to be vocal about things that matter to individual employees without coming across as overbearing. The purpose of this exercise should be clear to everyone in the company and employees at all points should feel that there is an open channel of communication within the management about anything and everything. It is the responsibility of the manager to ask a series of different questions each time and then just actively listen to what the employee has to say. Write down important inputs. Soon enough there will be a much more vibrant and thriving work culture.

2.  Surveys: Not everyone has excellent communication skills, therefore not everyone will be open to talking all the time, especially to their superiors. Fear of retribution, in fact, is a common sentiment shared among many employees, which inhibits them to freely express themselves around the office.

Employee surveys can be an easy outlet for them to truly express themselves. It is important that such surveys are always anonymous otherwise the purpose would be counterproductive. Regularly held anonymous surveys help the management to gauge both the quantitative and qualitative aspects regarding employee satisfaction. Some people may even pitch new ideas in these anonymous surveys which they would otherwise never pitch in person. Such surveys are cost-effective and time-efficient methods to hear out ideas and concerns of the employees. Questions on the survey need to be simple, straightforward, engaging yet different every time.

 How to Boost Employee Satisfaction?

Once the company has qualitative and quantitative data to gauge with, the next inevitable step is to work on increasing their satisfaction at work? Below we list out 5 ways to boost employee satisfaction. 

1.  Reward and celebrate every small milestone: Celebrate every big and small achievement of individuals and teams like one big family. This creates a sense of belonging and harmony to a larger network of the company. Someone had a baby? Celebrate it. The sales team hit the target? Celebrate it. These celebrations don’t need to be extravagant. A cake doesn’t cost much but the feeling of satisfaction that it creates remains unmatched and it takes the company to a whole new level.

2. Encourage employees to improve their health and wellness: The most effective option for a company is to provide expansive health and wellness benefits, over the mandatory requirement of course. Employees are more likely to join or stay in a company that provides such benefits. The reason is that when two of the most essential things, salary, and health, are well taken care of, it would certainly make her secure and content. Such an employee undoubtedly qualifies as a satisfied employee. 

Bodily movements and regular exercises have a proven record of boosting those happy hormones. The company may offer regular exercise sessions like yoga or Zumba in the office. This allows everyone to take a break, de-stress, and rejuvenate. Junk food is a major cause of a sedentary lifestyle, there should not be junk food vending machines in the office premises, instead, companies can now have vending machines dispensing all types of healthy food. Lastly, most underrated and our favorite, a solid 20 minutes afternoon nap, does wonder to the brain. 

 The process of improving employee satisfaction should be organically intertwined within the company’s culture. It should be a part of the company’s identity and not merely a one-time thing. There are no right or wrong answers here. Everyone is in the same learning boat, if something doesn’t work, change things around and if something does work, improve it. The ultimate goal of all exercises is to make employees excited and enthusiastic to come to work without burning a hole in the company’s pocket.
